How to Calculate Size for a Central Air Conditioning Unit

If you found out that you need a new central air conditioner and you have never been through the air conditioning installation process before or if it’s been awhile, then you may be wondering how we determine what size air conditioner unit to install. Accurate calculations and measurements are incredibly important. If the air conditioner unit is the wrong size, either too big or too small, it can drive up the cost of your cooling bills. We specialize in air conditioning installation in Plymouth, so we wanted to discuss these calculations and measurements in more detail.

When we are on an air conditioning installation job, the first thing we consider is the square footage of your home and how much of that square footage needs to be cooled.

With the square footage information, we then calculate the correct cooling capacity, which is measured in British Thermal Units (BTUs) per hour. The larger the area that needs to be cooled means the more BTUs per hour that are needed.

Next we calculate and make adjustments for other circumstances. For example, how much shade your home gets, how many people live in your home, what kind of insulation your home has, what kind of shape it is in and the climate you live in. For Minnesota, our climate is in Zone 5, which includes all of the other northern states in the United States.

Once we have these questions answered, we can factor those into the overall calculations for the air conditioning installation project. We believe going the extra mile by taking the measurements and making the calculations is the right thing to do for our customers. Newer central air conditioners are far more energy efficient than older models, so you can see savings on your electric bill after you have one installed.

An air conditioner that is too big will turn on and run too quickly. Then it will rapidly cool your home and shut off. It will repeat this cycle, which defeats the purpose of having a more energy efficient model installed.

An air conditioner that is too small will run constantly to try and catch up to the temperature that you want for the home. This will run up the cost of your cooling bills. Air conditioners are meant to work slowly over time and not to just quickly cool your home.

Signs You Might Need a New Air Conditioner

It's almost officially summer, and that means a lot of people are running their air conditioners to stay cool and comfortable and beat the heat. We are HVAC contractors in Orono, and we are often called to homes this time of year to fix or replace air conditioners. So here are a few tell-tale signs that a new air conditioner might be in your future.

Are you calling HVAC contractors like us frequently for repair work on your air conditioner? If it seems like you are calling someone for help almost non-stop, then it's probably time to call our HVAC contractors to find out about getting a new air conditioner installed. We'll take the precise measurements and do all of the calculations to ensure we install the correct size air conditioner. That way, you don't pay any more for your cooling bills than what you have to.

Another sign that you should call HVAC contractors like us to talk about a new air conditioner is if your current air conditioner unit is more than 10 years old. Air conditioners will usually last around 10 years, so if yours is older than 10, it's probably time to get a new one anyway. Newer models are more energy efficient, so you could see some savings on your cooling bill over the long term if you have a new air conditioner installed by qualified HVAC contractors like us.

Finally, if your current air conditioner just isn't keeping your home comfortable anymore, it's time to give our HVAC contractors a call. We can come out to assess your air conditioner, and if we have to replace it, we can set up a time to get that taken care of so you are not without your air conditioner for long.

How to Avoid Summertime HVAC Repair

One of the worst times of year to need HVAC repair for your air conditioner is during the warm summer months. It can be frustrating to turn on the AC, only to find that no air or, worse, warm air, is blowing out of your vents. Air Jeff's specializes in HVAC repair in Orono and the surrounding areas, and we have a few prevention tips for you on how to avoid HVAC repair.

First of all, you should make sure that your air conditioner's coils and sensors are properly cleaned. Calling HVAC experts like the ones at Air Jeff's is a great way to make sure these parts are correctly cleaned. We know how to get the job done safely and effectively, and that way you don't have to worry about doing it yourself! Keeping these clean and having them cleaned on a yearly basis is one of the best ways to avoid the need for HVAC repair.

Changing the filters is another great way to help prevent HVAC repair. Most filters are not that expensive, and if you are unsure of how to do it or what kind of filter to buy, let us know. We can send someone out to show you, and that way you can do it on your own on a monthly basis. This can also help extend the lifespan of your air conditioning system.

Another task you can do to avoid HVAC repair is to make sure the outdoor unit is cleaned. Be sure all debris, like leaves and twigs, are fully cleaned out of the unit and out from underneath it. You should check the unit at least once a week, and you should also check it after any severe weather has occurred.

Finally, test your thermostat. Use it to turn your air conditioner on, and make sure the air that is coming out of the vents is cool. Testing it can help ensure you do not need more expensive and time-consuming HVAC repair in the future.
